Experiential learning is at the core of Koi-Fly Creative’s summer internship program, which is unlike any other.
Every summer, our team invites a group of talented and deserving college students into the Koi-Fly Creative internship team. Since its inception a few years ago, the program has evolved into a highly intentional and curated ecosystem that allows for a mutually beneficial exchange of talent, eagerness to learn, and mentorship.
About the Koi-Fly Internship Program
Throughout the summer, Koi-Fly Creative acts as a catalyst between two elements: students who need expert mentorship and resources to fulfill their passions and a community-focused non-profit. To us, it isn’t just about giving students workshops on marketing and video production to increase their confidence in the industry; it’s using mentorship as a vehicle to pay it forward to a deserving non-profit with a story to tell. By partnering students with a nonprofit, they receive a hands-on chance to apply their newfound skills behind the camera while supporting a great cause.
We wanted to steer away from the traditional internship that includes constant coffee runs and decided that our program would involve an immersive experience. To create a more realistic synergy between the program and the real world necessities, we task the interns with creating a mini production agency with their own client (procured by the intern supervision team at Koi-Fly) and travel through the marketing and production process from strategy, pre-production, production, post-production, and amplification. Each intern embraces a role similar to a real role within Koi-Fly such as Director of Photography or Producer.
At the end of the summer, the intern team delivers a pro-bono video and marketing distribution plan for the non-profit client. But from the beginning, the team goes through the marketing and production process from start to finish to understand the non-profit client’s fundraising goals, volunteer initiatives, and long term planning to develop the story for the video and trajectory for the marketing plan.
Last summer, our Production Intern Julie played the role of Director of Photography. She mainly focused on the technical and artistic decisions related to the shot list and final piece and was the cinematographer on set for the non-profit client shoot. Julie also played a huge role in editing the final promotional piece. Julie, a film production student at Ithaca College, now works in Los Angeles for Delirio Films.
“It was really great to have all three of us working on this project because we could bounce a lot of ideas off of each other and we could all contribute our strengths to the concept.”

The responsibilities would include:
- Working closely with our Producers
- Assist in post-production media management and editing for internal jobs
- Working as a Production Assistant during shoots
- Handling Appearance Releases, Location Permits, Expense Reports, etc.
- Researching for Project Development
- Behind the Scenes Photography and Graphic Design
- Have the potential to deliver videos that succinctly and clearly tell the desired story
- Experience with editing and Adobe Creative Cloud
- Knowledge of digital videography and photography cameras and equipment
- Supporting the Director of Photography and Producers in all aspects of pre-production, production, and post-production.
- Must be motivated, courageous, creative, decisive, caring, passionate, eager to learn, and driven.
Skills preferred but not required:

All undergraduates and recent graduates pursuing a career in the communication industry are welcomed to apply. However, we are specifically interested in Film and Communications majors.
